about

~ ~ ~

Known as a female Leonard Cohen – poetic, meditative, and reclusive - Wolf Larsen channels a deep well of emotion into her songs about hope, prayer, love, death, God, and the Jedi order.

Her rare live shows are known for transforming noisy barroom venues into quiet Sunday evening vespers. Formerly based in San Francisco, she has now taken up residence in the Sonoran Desert.

Reviews:

"Perfectly written, arranged and produced. This album induces tears, and touches that really vulnerable human part of us all." ~Nisan Perera, The Citrus Report

"In a world of slightly disposable music, this one is sticking with me for a long while." ~Bob Boilen, NPR Music - All Songs Considered

"If seeing Wolf perform live is scripture, Quiet at the Kitchen Door is a canon of Renaissance paintings." ~ Shareef Ali, No Gods Before Music

"By the time I’d learned more about her story, and played the album a few dozen more times, it had made it to my ‘Top Albums of the Decade’ list.

...If one of the purposes of music is to help us make connections and draw strength from each other (and I think it is) then albums like this are the ones that we need to hold on to dearly and listen to again and again." ~ Melissa Murphy, The Independent

Track Name: Kitchen Door
No was her name
No was the lion that no one could tame
But Faith was his name
Faith came around with a smile on his face anyway
He said, tell, tell me now
Tell me the worry that knit up your brow

She said slow down this train
Slow down the iron that runs in my veins

I can hear you tap tappin at my kitchen door
I can hear the river run, and the rive want more
Don’t you know, I’m already sure
I can hear you tap tappin at my kitchen door

But No kept her name
No got so quiet she put out her flame
But Faith stayed the same
Faith came around with that smile on his face the next day
He said, follow me down
Follow me down with your pick and your plow

I can hear you tap tappin at my kitchen door
I can hear the river run and the river want more
Don’t you know, I am already sure
I can hear you standing quiet at my kitchen door.
Track Name: No One's To Blame
I was leaving when you came
Just a girl en route, in the rain
And now I must send you away
And if I had to say,
No one’s to blame.

I had never seen a face
Pulled my white hot tears from their resting place
I had never heard my name
Like a holy word
Like a white hot flame
So send me the mountain
And the man who lives on it
Who whistle in the moonlight
A three note sonnet
Who sees and knows
The song is a river
Who dips in my hand just to show me the water

So send me the mountain
And that man who lives on it
Who whistle in the moonlight
A three note sonnet
Who sees and knows
His song is the river
Who dips in my hand just to show me the water

I was leaving when you came
Just a girl en route, in the rain
And now I have sent you away
And if I had to say,
No one’s to blame.
Track Name: Two Doves
Two doves came in the snow and rain
Grey and white in the middle of the night
And they watched me, yes they watched me
And they pulled a wreath from the old oak tree
And you know they laid it right round me
Right round me

And does the holy notion hear our cry?
And do you tie your letters tight?
What do you see when you close your eyes?
Do you pray like me,
In the middle of the night.

And when the white dove, a light in the rain
Dove down deep, deep in the water
Yes, the water
And they grey dove laughed, babe take it back
Stay with me out of the water
Yes the water

And does the holy notion hear our cry?
And do you tie your letters tight?
What do you see when you close your eyes?
Do you cry out like me,
In the middle of the night.

And does the holy notion hear our cry?
And do you tie your letters tight?
What do you see when you close your eyes?
Do you pray like me?
Do you cry out like me?
Do you pray like me,
In the middle of the night.
Track Name: Wild Things (Live)
We come in the middle of the night -
We don’t care if we shine so bright -
And we don’t care what you saw,
Or what you might.

We’re gonna make it like those pictures in your mind
We gonna rock it like the Holy Jackson 5

And we pray to a different god
Paper crowns and our wolf suits on
We gonna stamp our feet and throw our mouths so wide
We gonna make it like those pictures in your mind
We gonna run, we are those Things out in the Wild

Hold your pictures to the light
Hold your children every night

And we run with our red shoes on and
We don’t know if we’re right or wrong
But we will bring you close
And show you how to cry
We’re gonna make it like a picture in the sky
We gonna rock it like the Holy Jackson 5
We gonna run, we are those Things out in the Wild
Track Name: Jedi
The hero she is sleeping
A Jedi princess keeping
A sword inside a song
She is the grimmest reaper reaping

There are dragons in your letters
There is hope of something better
But you wait and watch and see
And never show your heart to me

And the mother she is singing
And the worried hands are wringing
But it all goes to the sky
It’s like a thousand rubies, spinning

But heroes are in theory
And my wooden heart is weary
Send me up into the sky
Like Diana in her fury

There is coffee on the table
There is paper, when you’re able
Write the truth, the word, the name
To stitch forever to this fable

So I’m leaving for St. Thomas
Leaving you for old St. Thomas
For the dawn will always break your arms
That circle of your promise

But I know you will find me
Maybe deaf, dumb, or blind
But you will lift me like a Jedi
Like a diamond for the sky to wear at dawn.
Track Name: If I Be Wrong
What if I’m wrong, what if I’ve lied
What if I’ve dragged you here to my own dark night
And what if I know, what if I see
There is a crack run right down the front of me

What if they’re right, what if we’re wrong
What if I’ve lured you here with a siren song?

But if I be wrong, if I be right
Let me be here with you tonight

Ten thousand cars, ten thousand trains
There are ten thousand roads to run away

But I am not lost, I am not found
I am not Dylan’s wife, not Cohen’s hound

But if I be wrong, if I be right
Let me be here with you tonight

And what if I can’t, what if I can
What if I’m just an ordinary man

If there is a will, there is a way
I will escape for sure, I am David Blane

But if I be wrong, if I be right
Let me be here with you
If I be wrong, if I be right
Let me stay here in your arms tonight
And I have been wrong, I have been right
I have been both these things all in the same night
So if I be wrong, if I be right
Let me here, with you, tonight.
Track Name: Maybe, Baby
Je t’adore, and you should know
You can say the words to me
Maybe, baby

But I won’t know
And you won’t show
You can make it up to me
Maybe, baby

If you say oh-oh-oh-oh

And you can’t know
You can’t show
You can make it home with me
Maybe, baby

We say oh-oh-oh-oh

Je t’adaore, and you should know
You can say the words to me
Maybe, baby

Say oh-oh-oh-oh
Mmhm.
Track Name: Jesse's Song
Even though you got your rolling stone
And even though I know you go this alone
It’s a long way down, and I’ll follow
Cause I know, it’s a long way from home.

And you went walking up that mountain
And we were singing out that midnight hymn
And even though it’s a long way down
I will go, just to keep you around.

So if you see me in that street fair crowd
If you see me won’t you wave around?
It’s a long way down, and I’ll follow you
Cause I know, you’d follow me too.

So even though you got your rolling stone
And even though I know you go this alone
It’s a long way down, and I’ll follow
Cause I know, I might carry you home.
Track Name: The Last Brother
When the last brother boards that plane
And the holy father reads his name
And the salt water down your face
Virgina sings, Amazing Grace.

When the revolution calls your name
And breaks your heart all over again
Well the torch kept burning on a young man’s face
And the band kept playing Amazing Grace.

And old Queen Mary laid him down
And raised her flag high over the town
And the lion rose up with his crown
And the morning made an amazing sound.

I was lost, now I’m found
I was lost, now I’m found.
Track Name: Wolf Larsen
You take your coat, I’m gonna carry your name
But papa I will meet you on that train

They put your name up in that hall of fame
Cause the kids come a runnin out across a great, Great Plain
You called me twice, you said baby you like nice
And then you asked to speak to Momma

You said I’ll bring my coat
You carry my name
Then baby, I will meet you on that train

It go mm-mm
Mm-mm
Mm-mm
Mm-mm

With a laugh like a wheat field in June
And a smile like a Sunday groom
You took that car over to that bar
But Dorothy know just where you been

She said you get your coat
I’ll sign your name
But Papa you better get back on that train

It’s a dusty bowl and it’s full of thieves
It’s a dusty bowl, and it’s all I need
When te wind come down on those prairie eaves
That’s where you’ll find me, I get down on my knees

One long note cross one long night
It’s a midnight solo, I’m a sing it all my life
In the pourin’ rain, and the midnight fame
Well Papa I can see you on that train

It go mm-mm
Mm-mm
Mm-mm
Mm-mm
